Wai Lana's advice on fasting

I've been wanting to write to Wai lana's fan speak for a while now..
I admire these people who've written already:
Wai Lana's Response:

Thank you for your recent request for advice. Before we reply, please note that the comments we give you may or may not apply for your personal (medical) condition, of which we have no knowledge. As with all exercise programs, please contact your doctor or licensed health professional for specific recommendations and treatment.

Dear Christen,

Thank you very much for your e-mail and your kind words.

I hope you're feeling better and are able to exercise a little more now. As you've seen, yoga has so much to offer that even if you can't do the poses, you can always practice meditation.

Fasting is part of the hatha yoga process and can be helpful if done correctly. Many yogis fast one day a week to give the digestive system a rest. You can do a one-day fast drinking only water, or you may prefer to do a juice fast. Water fasts are more intense, and sometimes the cleansing process occurs too quickly. For example, you may experience headaches when toxins are released. If you fast on juice, which is less intense, it's generally safe to fast for up to three days. If you're planning a longer fast, consult your doctor first. Also, fasting may be harmful and dangerous if you're taking medication, so be sure to talk to your doctor if that's the case.

If you do decide to fast, drink plenty of liquids. Eat light, natural foods both before and after the fast to ease your body into and out of the fasting condition. That way, even if the actual fast lasts only a day or two, a light and healthy diet both before and after will enhance the benefits of the fast and make you feel cleaner inside. During the fast, don't do any heavy workouts. Light stretching or walking is fine.

Kind regards,

Wai Lana

P.S. I have a cookbook coming out shortly. I'll add you to our mailing list and we'll send you an e-mail when it's available in case you're interested.

Asana Video of the week: Toes and Palms Balance Pose

Toes and Palms Balance Pose

Everyone knows that push-ups make your arms strong. In this push-up-like yoga pose, you'll strengthen your arms without even moving.

1. Kneel down and sit on your heels.

2. Lean forward and fully extend your arms.

3. Lift your buttocks and come onto all fours.

4. Inhale and lift your knees from the floor, straightening your legs. Lower your buttocks until your body forms a straight line. Raise your head and look forward. Press your hands firmly down and lift away from them. Hold the pose for 15 to 30 seconds, breathing slowly and deeply.

5. Lower your knees to the floor, then sit on your heels to rest.

Focus in the Pose...
Make sure your buttocks are neither too high nor too low. Your body should be as straight as a plank from your heels to your shoulders.

To Intensify the Pose...
Contract your buttocks and thighs, squeezing them together and up toward the waist. Hold as long as you can, then release and repeat.

Benefits
•Strengthens the wrists, arms, and shoulders
•Firms the abs and buttocks
•Tones the nervous system

Wonder berry: Goji

Just recently there was yet another study on how healthy goji berries are for you.

Goji Berries - These berries first rose to prominence here in the west when it was discovered that the goji berry contained 500 times more vitamin C per ounce than oranges; more than any other fruit. They are also rich sources of vitamins A, B1, B2, B6 and E as well as having a complete protein profile including 18 amino acids and 21 trace minerals. Goji berries are also potent antioxidants.

These different gift baskets are for sale at Wailana's store now.
These are truly beautiful and healthy ways to say "Thank you" and "I love you" to mom!

Yoga Chips!

These Yoga Chips are just making me hungry! You have no idea how much I miss eating my chips. Since I've been a bit more conscious of my health, I've quit eating all the chips and chocolates and it's made such a huge impact on my health, but that doesn't mean I don't miss chips! Now that I have a healthy excuse, haha!!

Mother's day

Mother's day is just around the corner. A good friend and teacher of mine said to me once, "Generally mothers are very unappreciated people." And the unfortunate thing is that is so true! Mothers have to go through so much just to carry babies in the first place, and the rest of it.. my, ask any mother.

This year Wai lana's got a whole new batch of gift baskets which are 30% off.

Show your mom love and appreciation, with these beautiful gift baskets. I'm getting the Yoga Serenity for my mom, and the Rejuvinate one for my mother in law.
